'Thirty Has Always Been A Magic, Far Off Age' Thirty is coming! The looming big 3-0. The age that every 20-something I know cites as the year they will probably; get married, have a baby, buy a house, settle down and reach their career 'peak'. But hang on… is that REALLY going to happen? According to a Ted Talk by psychologist Meg Jay, we are conditioned to believe that we don't have to take things seriously in our twenties as, after all 30 is the new 20. But (and it's a big, scary but…) she argues we should 're-claim adulthood in the defining decade of our lives' and basically, stop thinking that things will magically fall into place at 30. I have to admit that I have fallen victim to the 'I'll start worrying about that when I'm 30' way of thinking… until now. As I approach my 28th birthday I'm reminded that it took me a good few, awkward, cocktail-soaked years to achieve the things I wanted in my twenties, such as getting a good degree, moving to London and landing a job in journalism. Yet, I've only given myself a year, the year of 30, to achieve a whole new set of life goals which I've set for my next life 'stage'. Thirty has always been the magic, far off age sitting on the horizon since I left home at 18 and decided to dedicate an entire decade to a Peter Pan lifestyle in London where the main focus of my life would be my career and friends. Now, looking up to those 30-somethings around me who seem to have it all sorted, I'm starting to get the feeling (and the fear) that if I want to achieve these goals too, I better shake things up. And fast. So what is a 20-something to do? Should we be thinking about where and what we want to be at 30 and start making moves now or should we savor every last drop of our commitment free 20s? If you still need a little more persuasion here's 5 reasons to dust off your trainers… 1. Netball Legs No matter how much you go to the gym, or how good your squatting/burpees/lunges routine is, until you have run and super-jumped your way around a sweaty indoor court, side-stepped and sprinted around for an entire, unrelenting hour, week in week out, you have not seen your legs in their full sculpted glory. Ditto re: Netball bum. 2. The Pub Possibly the most persuasive reason to join a Netball team ever. Inevitably, after you've sweated out all your stresses on court, the team will head to their local to enjoy a swift wine or two and some post-match banter. Yes, sport and wine. Sport and wine. Say it again, and try to tell us you're not sold yet. 3. Mates There are no better mates than team mates – with these friends you not only get to go to the pub together, but (hopefully) win together, sing your best chants together… And you know, no matter how flaky they might be, you're definitely going to see them at training a couple of times a week. Also, with these friends it's socially acceptable (and secretly fun) to regress to a teenage state wherein wearing all matching dresses with your names on the back and plaiting each other's hair into pigtails is totally the norm. 4. It's More Fun Than The Treadmill Netball keeps you super fit. Like, really, super fit. And you don't even notice you're doing it. Taking part in an actively competitive game makes you work harder than you ever would normally, if only so you don't feel like you've let your new mates down. Also, it keeps you mentally healthy – when you only care about getting your mitts on that ball, you can't help but clear your mind – and mentally agile, whilst being infinitely more fun than a Sudoku. If that doesn't work, vent some of that pent up aggression you've had brewing with a sly, ill-timed lunge for the ball. 5. More Food! Since you're burning all those calories, you need to make sure you keep your energy levels up. Pub tea? NO PROBLEM! Get a pudding while you're at it.
